The lack of police interest in Gotten is highlighted by the publication of Katharina's letters to Gotten and the excerpts from the crime novel Helmut achieves a considerable critical success. His novel portrays the revolutionary development of German communism throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, and foreshadows the rise of the New Left, particularly in its communist division. The book describes a scene at Christmas 1970 (one year before Katharinas suicide) in which several hundred activists (mostly from political left-wing groups) marched from the former GDR border town of Allenstein to the Old Frankfurt Airport.
The striking estimated political expression of the New Left in the context of European Antifascism is the main subject of the book. The novel also follows Gotten's lawsuit against Die Zeitung for libel on several occasions over the publication of letters to and from Katharina. Several researchers follow the case, and a major result is the publication of a collection of texts which should be opened to a wider public.
Katharina agrees to a second interview, at which she tells Ttges the story of her relationship with Gtten, and, in particular, her sleeping with him while on a business trip. She describes their sexual liaison and the weeks of depression which follow. Eventually, she decides to end her life. She travels to Ceylon on the way, where she visits the Temple of the Dancing Shiva and contemplates jumping in front of a car. In the car, she decides to have sex with Ghenten and dies from an overdose of Dilantin. Gotten leaves the country.
